These instruments are based on the old "Lambert" instruments od the late 19th century with separate fingerboards for playabilty and improved sound, They are quiet instruments if played on the lap, traditionally they were placed on tabletops that acted at amplifiers. You can also place them on a board on your lap to do the same.
